MISSION STATEMENT
Incorporated in 2007, the non-profit (status pending) Firebird Arts Alliance brings artists and artistic organizations together, from all disciplines to collaborate in innovative and artistically fulfilling projects that profoundly benefit the lives of all Charlotte-Mecklenburg residents.
Through collaboration with each other, as well as with community, civic and service organizations and leaders, Firebird Arts Allies will work to inspire creativity in all of its stakeholders, to build bridges between races, cultures, religions and socio-economic groups, to educate young, emerging artists and to demonstrate the benefits of engaging each other with mutual respect and understanding.

ORGANIZATIONAL AND OPERATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Firebird will encourage COLLABORATION between all stakeholders, current as well as potential, including the Board of Directors, administration, artists, volunteers and audiences.
Firebird will avoid artistic compromise, by providing all the necessary resources to our Artistic Allies, in order for them to achieve their highest level of artistry.
Firebird will create an inclusive, trusting, and accessible organizational and operational structure.
Firebird will represent and include the Charlotte community at all levels of our organization. We will serve all races, ages, cultures, faiths and socio-economic backgrounds equally.
Firebird will maintain transparency at every level of our organization and in all of our operations.
Firebird intends to earn 75% of its income, and receive only 25% of its income through tax-deductible donations.

David J. Tang: Before founding Firebird, Mr. Tang completed his doctorate in Orchestra / Opera Conducting at the University of Michigan School of Music, in the spring of 2006. In 2004-05, he held the positions of Director of Orchestral Activities at West Virginia University, Assistant Conductor of the Wheeling Symphony, and Director of the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra. Mr. Tang was the Director of the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte, the combined choruses of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra from 1996-2004. Under his leadership, the Oratorio Singers of Charlotte performed to great local and regional acclaim, performing as many as 25 performances a year in a variety of formats. David also served as Associate Conductor of the Charlotte Symphony Orchestra from 1998-2003, leading as many as 40 performances per season with the orchestra. From 2002-2004, he also led the award-winning Choral Arts Society of Philadelphia, one of the most prestigious semi-professional choirs in the United States. His guest conducting engagements have included performances with the Wheeling, Quad City, Charleston and Windsor Symphony orchestras. He has also led many acclaimed ballet performances for the North Carolina Dance Theatre and has guest conducted Nutcracker performances for the Charleston Ballet Theatre. In 2001, Mr. Tang led members of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Philadelphia Singers in the nationally broadcast American debut of British tenor Russell Watson for PBS. In 1996, David Tang was hand selected to serve as assistant conductor and back-stage conductor for the 50th anniversary performances of Britten’s Peter Grimes at the Tanglewood Festival, where he worked closely with Seiji Ozawa and Robert Spano. Mr. Tang received degrees in orchestra and opera conducting from the University of Michigan School of Music, choral conducting from the Yale School of Music, and philosophy from Yale College. Mr. Tang has worked closely or studied with many of the other leading conductors of our time, including Robert Shaw, Helmuth Rilling, Seiji Ozawa, Kurt Masur, and Larry Rachleff. His major teachers include Kenneth Kiesler, Gustav Meier, Marguerite Brooks and Fenno Heath. David Tang grew up in Cleveland, Ohio where he studied piano, trumpet and french horn. Peppie Calvar Peppie Calvar is in his fourth year of teaching chorus and music theory at Northwest School of the Arts in Charlotte. His choirs have performed for Josh Groban, The Charlotte Senior Forum, The Bobcats Charitable Foundation, Tribble Creative Group, The Queen City Optimists Club, UNC-Charlotte and many others. He also serves as Associate Director and Composer in Residence for the Firebird Arts Alliance. Calvar earned his Master’s degree in choral conducting at Georgia State University in Atlanta, and his undergraduate degree in music education with a choral/vocal concentration from East Carolina University. He has performed as a singer for various sacred and secular organizations from Boston to Miami, including the Ethos Consortium, the Carolina Voices, and the Charlotte Oratorio Singers. He has performed as a percussionist before the American Bandmasters Association as a member of the Olde English Wind Ensemble from Winthrop University, and as a soloist for the Charlotte Symphony and the All State choirs of North Carolina. Some of his choral compositions are published by Colla Voce Publications and performed internationally. He has also been commissioned to compose for various organizations across the East Coast including the Charlotte Symphony, and churches, schools, and civic organizations nationwide. Rosalyn Allison-Jacobs: Over the course of her 20 years of management and organizational consulting experience, Ms. Allison-Jacobs has provided operational, organizational development and systems support to health care, public sector and non-profit organizations. In her role as implementation coordinator for outcome measurement with United Way of Central Carolinas, Inc., she was responsible for curriculum design, training and group facilitation with organizations that instituted systems for demonstrating program effectiveness. She holds a masters degree in Medical Care Organization from the University of Michigan. She has completed the Certificate Programs in Organizational Development and Organizational Training at UNCC, as well as coursework in the Masters in Industrial and Organizational Psychology program at UNCC. |
